Heads Up: Design and Development of Tooling
Tooling, as it pertains to application of ISO Series Standards i.e., ISO9001:2015, AS9100D, Clause 8.3 Design and Development of Products and Services.
With the development of the Accreditation Bodies and relentless focus of interpretations of the requirements in the standards, specifically with the release of ISO9001:2015 and AS9100D, it came to light that if the customer buys tools designed by a contract manufacturer, who then uses those tools, which are customer property, to produce the customer’s specified product, then the tooling is also a product. Therefore, the contract manufacturer who receives a Purchase Order from a Customer, to Design and Develop the Tooling to make the Customer Product, the Tooling then is a deliverable product. Therefore, the contract manufacturer cannot claim ISO9001:2015, AS9100D Clause 8.3 Design and Development of Products and Services as non-applicable.
